Sedation Dentist in St. Louis
I cannot say enough wonderful things about The Dental Anesthesia Center and Dr. Thoms. My 7-year-old, who has autism, recently had dental work done here and the experience exceeded expectations. The staff was incredibly kind, patient, and understanding of his needs. They took the time to make him and us feel comfortable, never rushed, and explained everything. I am so grateful for this office and the team that made my son's dental care possible. I would recommend The Dental Anesthesia Center and Dr Thoms to any parent, especially those with children who have special needs. They truly go above and beyond. ❤️

Very patient with elderly patients. Very good experience.
Response from the owner:Thank you for sharing your feedback! We’re pleased to know the visit was a positive experience.
My son has been a patient of Dr Michael Hoffman since he was 5 years old. He is now 21 years old. My son has diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and therefore I am cautious of who I select as a treatment provider. Dr. Hoffman’s office is professional, kind and I know they have his best interest at heart. I highly recommend Dr. Hoffman and staff to anyone seeking dental care.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words and recommendation! We truly appreciate your trust in our team over the years.
Super experience. Gentle and empathetic. All round care is great. Staff are wonderful.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind review! We’re so glad you had a great experience with our team.
We are forever grateful for Dr Hoffman and his wonderful staff for having the vision of how to get necessary dental work done for patients who are dealing with autism and cannot tolerate it without dental anesthesia. We have been taking our adult daughter there once a year for the last four years. Thanks to Dr Hoffman’s vast knowledge and expertise, our daughter has been able to get wisdom teeth removed, cavities filled, teeth cleaned and detailed X-rays to know exactly what needed done. The Dental Anesthesia Center is a great service to the community. Thank you so much for helping us.
Response from the owner:hank you so much for your thoughtful review and kind words about our team! We truly appreciate your trust in us and are honored to provide care in a way that helps make dental treatment more comfortable and accessible for all patients. Your feedback means a great deal to our entire staff.

Why Are People Afraid of the Dentist?

Dental anxiety is common and can stem from various reasons, including:

  • Fear of pain from past negative experiences.
  • Sensitivity to sounds, smells, or sensations associated with dental tools.
  • Fear of needles or injections during treatment.
  • A strong gag reflex making dental work uncomfortable.
  • Difficulty sitting still due to medical conditions or restlessness.

For those who experience dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can be the key to stress-free, pain-free dental care.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves medication to help patients relax or sleep during dental procedures. The type of sedation used depends on the level of anxiety, the complexity of the treatment, and the patient’s medical needs.

Types of Sedation Used in Pain-Free Dentistry:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
    • A mild sedative that helps you relax while remaining fully awake.
    • Wears off quickly, allowing you to resume normal activities immediately after your appointment.
  • Oral Sedation
    • A prescribed pill taken before the appointment to induce a deeper state of relaxation.
    • Patients often feel drowsy but remain conscious.
    • Ideal for moderate dental anxiety or longer procedures.
  • IV Sedation
    • Administered through an intravenous (IV) line for a deeper level of relaxation.
    • Patients remain conscious but may not remember the procedure.
    • Great for patients with severe dental anxiety or complex dental needs.
  • General Anesthesia
    • Used for patients with extreme anxiety, special needs, or complex procedures.
    • The patient is entirely unconscious and feels nothing during treatment.
    • Requires a licensed dental anesthesia provider to ensure safety.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who:

  • Experience dental fear or anxiety.
  • Have a low pain threshold.
  • Struggle with sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex.
  • Need extensive dental work in a single visit.
  • Special needs require a more controlled, calming experience.
  • Have had past traumatic dental experiences and want a stress-free option.

What to Expect at a Sedation Dental Appointment

Before Your Visit:

  • Your dentist will review your medical history and discuss the best sedation option.
  • If oral or IV sedation is used, you may need to avoid food and drinks for a few hours before the appointment.
  • Arrange for a driver to take you home if undergoing deep sedation or general anesthesia.

During the Procedure:

  • You will receive the chosen sedation method to help you feel relaxed or asleep.
  • Your dental team will monitor your vital signs throughout to ensure safety.
  • Your procedure will be completed with minimal discomfort or awareness.

Aftercare & Recovery:

  • If you had laughing gas, you’ll recover quickly and can drive yourself home.
  • If you had oral or IV sedation, you may feel groggy and should rest for the remainder of the day.
  • For general anesthesia, you will need someone to stay with you until the effects wear off completely.
