Overcoming Challenging Dental Visits for Patients with Special Needs

February 2, 2022 by DAC

We specialize in dentistry for patients with physical, medical, developmental, and cognitive conditions that limit their ability to receive proper care.

Approximately 20% of the population in the U.S. have some disability that affects their daily lives. For more than half of these individuals, their disability level is considered severe. From children to older ones, receiving dental care at home and at the dentist can prove challenging.

If you are a parent or caregiver of a person with special needs, The Dental Anesthesia Center is here to help. We offer special care dentistry for patients with physical, medical, developmental, and cognitive conditions that limit their ability to receive proper care. We can overcome the challenges associated with special needs individuals.

What is Special Care Dentistry?

Special-care dentistry is a branch of dentistry that provides oral care for individuals with physical, medical, developmental, and cognitive conditions. Their disabilities often limit their ability to receive such care. However, the oral health of persons with special needs directly affects their overall health. Excellent and proper dental care is essential for everyone and should be available, no matter a person’s situation.

Challenging Dental Care

What makes oral care for special needs patients so challenging? The answer is due, in part, to the difficulties encountered with structural, motor, and communication barriers. In addition, the degree of dependence on a caregiver for support makes a difference.

The challenge typically begins at home. A disabled individual may not provide adequately for their oral health. They may have difficulties holding a toothbrush or remembering to brush their teeth. This places much of the responsibility on the caregiver, and often oral care takes a backseat to other more demanding issues.

The challenge becomes even more formidable when it’s time to go to the dentist’s office. Wheelchair accessibility, emotional and physical support, and other physical or mental needs may not be able to be met. Many dental facilities and staff cannot overcome these barriers.

Overcoming the Challenge

The common barriers that patients with special needs have must be addressed. Finding a dentist who can provide specialized dental care can be very difficult. However, at The Dental Anesthesia Center, we specialize in dental care for special needs patients. We can overcome any physical, emotional, mental, or cognitive challenge. We provide gentle, safe, and relaxing dental care for your loved ones.
