Dental visits can be an overwhelming experience for many people.

Still, for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or a history of trauma, even the thought of sitting in a dental chair can provoke intense fear and anxiety. For these patients, conventional dental care settings may trigger memories, heightening emotional and physical distress.

At The Dental Anesthesia Center, we understand that trauma can affect every aspect of a person’s health, including their ability to receive dental care comfortably. That’s where sedation dentistry can play a transformative role.

Pain-Free Dentist St. Louis
I had an excellent experience with Dr. Behl and her entire team during my wisdom tooth extraction. I chose IV sedation, and it made all the difference. I was awake and aware throughout the procedure, but I felt completely relaxed and never experienced the panic or anxiety I usually have at the dentist. Dr. Behl and her staff were compassionate, professional, and attentive from start to finish, making sure I was comfortable every step of the way. If you have dental anxiety or avoid going to the dentist because of fear, I highly recommend Dr. Behl and her team. They provided exceptional care and made what I expected to be a stressful experience surprisingly calm and comfortable.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your thoughtful review and kind words! We’re honored by your recommendation and are so glad you had a positive experience with our team. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback!
All of the staff have been extremely incredible. Dr. Thoms was amazing & really helped calm me before my procedure. Dr. Thoms answered any & all questions I have had & was extremely understanding when it comes to having dental anxiety. Robyn was the best X-ray technician I have ever had. She felt personable but still extremely professional. Throughout my life I have been to numerous dentists in hopes of finding one that will take my extreme dental anxiety seriously & not make me feel bad for it. I have finally found my favorite dentist. The Dental Anesthesia Center is my #1 pick if I had to chose any dentist.
Response from the owner:Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experience. We’re grateful for your trust in our team and are pleased to hear you felt supported and comfortable throughout your visit. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to continuing to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.

I started seeing this practice as a scared middle age woman that thought she was quickly on the way to being toothless. Years later now, still working with the amazing Dr Behl and her amazing staff, I have been able to continue with my present teeth. Alway kind, full of grace, mercy and humor!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your thoughtful review. We’re honored to be part of your dental journey and appreciate your kind words about Dr. Behl and our team.
We have been taking our son to Dental Anesthesia since 2019. He gets his dental treatment and blood work done at the same time. We find the staff and Dr. Thoms highly professional. They communicate well and provide excellent treatment/services. Getting blood work done during sedation helps us a lot.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your experience. We’re honored to be part of your family’s care. We appreciate your trust in us.

Understanding the Connection Between Trauma and Dental Anxiety

Past trauma, particularly related to medical procedures, abuse, or a loss of control, can leave lasting emotional scars. For someone with PTSD, dental environments—with their bright lights, physical proximity, and unfamiliar sounds—can feel threatening. Even routine procedures can become emotionally taxing when they mirror aspects of a traumatic experience. As a result, many individuals delay or avoid dental care altogether, leading to declining oral health and compounding anxiety.

Trauma-informed dental care begins with awareness. It requires sensitivity, patience, and an understanding of how trauma manifests physically and emotionally. At The Dental Anesthesia Center, we approach each patient with empathy and care, tailoring treatment plans and prioritizing emotional safety as much as physical well-being.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Levels of sedation can range from mild (such as nitrous oxide) to moderate (oral or IV sedation) and, in some cases, general anesthesia. The type of sedation recommended depends on the individual’s medical history, the complexity of the dental procedure, and the severity of their anxiety or trauma response.

For patients affected by PTSD, sedation can create a calming and manageable experience, helping reduce sensory overload and allowing dental treatment to proceed without overwhelming stress. It also minimizes the body’s natural fight-or-flight response, making the experience feel safer and more controlled.

1. Reduced Anxiety Before and During Appointments
Sedation helps ease the anticipatory fear that often begins days or weeks before a dental visit. Once at the office, sedation can provide a sense of emotional detachment from stressful stimuli, allowing patients to remain calm and cooperative.

2. Enhanced Comfort and Pain Management
Many individuals with trauma histories are hypersensitive to pain or may associate discomfort with past traumatic events. Sedation can help reduce this sensitivity and make the procedure far more tolerable.

3. Fewer Appointments
For patients who experience extreme distress, multiple short visits can be emotionally exhausting. Sedation often allows for longer, more comprehensive procedures in a single appointment, reducing the number of visits needed.

4. Restored Confidence and Trust
A positive dental experience can rebuild trust in healthcare providers and restore a sense of control. Many patients feel empowered after receiving care in a supportive, non-judgmental setting.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

A trauma-informed approach means more than offering sedation. It involves open communication, a willingness to listen, and a flexible approach to patient care. At The Dental Anesthesia Center, we encourage patients to share their concerns and triggers. We work collaboratively to establish signals, pacing, and expectations that help the patient feel more secure.

Ways We Support Trauma-Affected Patients:

  • Private, quiet treatment rooms
  • Extra time allocated for appointments
  • Staff trained in trauma-sensitive communication
  • Flexible scheduling to avoid crowded waiting areas
  • Optional presence of a caregiver or support person
  • Use of non-threatening language and step-by-step explanations

These small but significant steps can make a world of difference for someone navigating dental care with a history of trauma.

You Are Not Alone

If you or someone you love avoids the dentist due to anxiety, fear, or past trauma, know that compassionate care is available. Sedation dentistry isn’t just about making procedures easier—it’s about making care accessible and humane for those who need it most.

At The Dental Anesthesia Center, we specialize in helping patients who face unique challenges. We are here to listen without judgment, provide tailored sedation options, and create a path to better oral health that respects your comfort and boundaries.
