Special Needs Child Dentist

Finding the right dental care for a child with special needs can be challenging for St. Charles County families. Parents and caregivers often face obstacles when searching for a provider who truly understands their child’s unique physical, emotional, and sensory needs. Fortunately, just a short drive away, The Dental Anesthesia Center (DAC) in St. Louis is a trusted resource for compassionate, specialized care that puts patient comfort first.

Here’s what St. Charles parents need to know about special needs pediatric dentistry—from what to expect at your child’s first visit to how advanced sedation options can make dental appointments stress-free.

Why Special Needs Dentistry Requires a Different Approach

Children with developmental, physical, cognitive, or sensory differences often require dental care tailored to their specific needs. Routine visits to a general dental office may not provide the right environment, support, or tools needed to ensure their comfort and safety.

At The Dental Anesthesia Center, our care team is highly trained to work with patients with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and a wide range of other special needs. We understand that the dental chair can be overwhelming for some children, and we design our appointments to be calm, comforting, and predictable.

Common Challenges St. Charles Parents Face

If you’re a parent in St. Charles County, you may have experienced one or more of the following:

  • Local dental offices that aren’t equipped for behavioral or mobility challenges
  • Limited sedation options, especially for children who are non-verbal or have high anxiety
  • Long waitlists for pediatric specialists
  • Fear of triggering sensory meltdowns during appointments

These barriers often cause parents to delay or skip dental care altogether. Unfortunately, avoiding routine cleanings and exams can lead to more serious oral health issues later on.

The Solution: A Patient-Centered, Sedation-Friendly Dental Experience

At DAC, we offer a fully equipped dental facility with general anesthesia and IV sedation options—ideal for children who are unable to tolerate standard dental procedures. Our board-certified dental anesthesiologists and caring support staff prioritize patient comfort and safety above all.

We work closely with parents and caregivers to create a custom treatment plan based on your child’s:

  • Medical history and medications
  • Behavioral and emotional needs
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Communication preferences

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit

We understand that new experiences can be difficult for children with special needs. That’s why we take time to ensure each visit is as low-stress as possible. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Pre-Visit Phone Consultation: Before the first visit, our team will discuss your child’s specific needs in detail.
  2. Sensory-Aware Environment: Lights are dimmed, noise is minimized, and all tools and procedures are explained step-by-step in a kid-friendly way.
  3. Meet-and-Greet Option: If your child benefits from gradual exposure, we can schedule a meet-and-greet before the dental procedure.
  4. Sedation Options: If your child requires sedation, we walk you through every step of the process, including recovery.

Types of Sedation Available for Special Needs Pediatric Dentistry

Depending on your child’s needs, our doctors may recommend one of the following:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild sedative for children who need help staying calm.
  • Oral Sedation: Medication taken before the appointment to help with relaxation.
  • IV Sedation: Administered directly into the bloodstream, ideal for longer procedures or patients with high anxiety.
  • General Anesthesia: Used for patients with severe dental anxiety or complex medical conditions; allows the child to sleep through the entire procedure.

Every sedation plan is personalized and discussed in detail with the parent or caregiver to ensure complete understanding and comfort.

Dr. Behl! I cannot recommend Dr. Maris Behl enough. If you have dental anxiety, she is truly the kind of dentist you hope to find. If teeth could be wrapped in pillows and protected by flying unicorns, Dr. Behl would somehow make it happen. I have significant anxiety around dental procedures and have needed deeper sedation for dental work in the past. From the beginning, Dr. Behl took the time to listen to my concerns and made me feel genuinely heard rather than dismissed or rushed. She created such a sense of trust and safety that I was eventually able to have my dental work done with only nitrous instead of full sedation, which is something I honestly didn’t think I would be comfortable doing. During my crown placement, she explained what she was doing throughout the procedure, which made an enormous difference in keeping me calm. She also took the time to address a filling that had been bothering me for what felt like forever — and she actually fixed the problem. What stands out most about Dr. Behl is how safe I feel in her care. She is compassionate, patient, communicative, and incredibly attentive to how her patients are feeling. For someone with dental anxiety, that combination is invaluable. Finding a dentist I trust this much has completely changed my experience with dental care. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Behl and would recommend her without hesitation, especially to anyone who has dental anxiety or has struggled to feel comfortable receiving dental treatment.
Response from the owner:Thank you for such incredibly kind words! We’ll be sure to pass this along to Dr. Behl. We’re pretty sure the flying unicorns are going to be the part she remembers most! 🦄💙 We’re so glad our team could help make your experience a more comfortable one.
Dr Thoms and his team are phenomenal. No question, the absolute best possible option for my child when he needed work done while sleeping (age based). While this option is not inexpensive, this set up of have anesthesiology in-house allowed us to get his mouth healthy when a traditional pediatric dentist could/would not. I am a parent that asks a lot of questions on behalf of my toddler’s care and at no point did I feel judged for this, nor was I rushed during my evaluation process during the consultation. Although the procedure is not one I would like to repeat for my child, my husband and I were both so pleased with how well Dr. Thoms communicated and how he clearly cared for our son’s wellbeing (both physical and emotional during a less than comfortable visit). Cannot recommend the back of house team more highly. My one detraction is the FOH staff (not everyone) were not nearly as pleasant. I would like to communicate that while their day-to-day is very routine for them, being in that office as a parent is very scary for some people in their office and a little bit of kindness goes along way. I do recall, having a very pleasant conversation with Rebecca, but otherwise everyone else was on the apathetic side, in my personal opinion. That said you’ll notice that I still am leaving a five star review because the dental staff really just knocked out of the park, but as a parent I want to encourage you to look past any rudeness you may experience over email or on the phone because Dr. Thom’s is really that excellent.
Response from the owner:Thank you for taking the time to share such thoughtful feedback. We’re grateful to hear that our team provided compassionate, attentive care and took the time to answer your questions throughout the process. We also appreciate your comments regarding your experience with our front office team and will certainly share your feedback. Your kind words mean so much to us!
