Tooth Extraction With Sedation Dentistry: What to Expect

Nervous about having a tooth pulled? The Dental Anesthesia Center offers tooth extractions with sedation and general anesthesia, so you feel little to nothing.

For many people, the idea of having a tooth removed is enough to put off dental care for months — or years. If anxiety, fear, or a sensitive gag reflex has kept you from getting treatment you know you need, sedation dentistry can make the experience feel completely different.

At The Dental Anesthesia Center in St. Louis, we specialize in caring for patients who don’t do well in traditional dental settings. Tooth extractions — including complex or surgical ones — are among the most common procedures we perform under sedation or general anesthesia.

Outstanding dental services are available here! If you're looking for dentists and support personnel who really care, look no further.
I have been going here for 30 years and the extra care they take is outstanding.
My dental hygienist is Laina and I can’t say enough nice things about her, along with everyone else who works at The Dental Anesthesia Center. Laina is polite, patient, makes sure I am comfortable throughout the entire appointment, and answers all my questions thoroughly. The two dentists I have seen there have also been great (Behl and Thoms). Everyone there works together to create a kind, peaceful atmosphere. I never feel like I am bothering them with questions or rushed through my appointment, even though they are booked all day. I really love this about them and I hope it never changes! To run such a ‘tight ship’ AND provide patient and top notch care at a place most people feel uneasy, seems like an impossible feat, but somehow they do it. And they all do it seamlessly!!! So grateful I found this place which I highly recommend.
We have a special needs child that gets wonderful care by Dr Hoffmann and his staff. They do remarkable dentistry for those that require extra time and care. We are grateful to have this type of dentistry in our state and available for our daughter's needs.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your thoughtful review and kind words. We’re grateful for the trust families place in our team and are honored to provide compassionate, individualized care. Your support means so much to us.
The staff were very kind to my daughter and immediately put her at ease.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind review! We’re so glad our team could help create a welcoming and comforting experience. We truly appreciate your feedback!

Why Sedation Changes Everything for Extractions

A standard extraction at a general dentist involves local anesthetic, pressure, and a lot of conscious awareness. For patients with severe dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, needle phobia, or a difficult medical history, that experience can feel impossible.

Sedation dentistry removes the conscious experience of the procedure. Depending on the level used — oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia — you may feel deeply relaxed, drowsy, or completely unaware that anything is happening. Most patients describe waking up with little to no memory of the procedure.

This isn’t “light sedation” offered at a general dentist’s office. Our team administers hospital-level anesthesia care in a clinical environment designed specifically for medically complex and highly anxious patients.

Before Your Appointment

Once your consultation is complete and your care plan is in place, you’ll receive detailed pre-op instructions. These typically include:

  • Fasting guidelines — nothing to eat or drink for several hours before, depending on the sedation type
  • Medication review — our team will go over any prescriptions or supplements that may interact with anesthesia
  • Arranging a ride — you will not be able to drive yourself home; a trusted adult must accompany you

We encourage you to ask every question you have before the day of your procedure. Our team expects it.

The Day of Your Extraction

When you arrive, our clinical team will review your health history and confirm your comfort level. The sedation is administered — either by IV, inhalation, or oral medication — and carefully monitored throughout.

Once you’re in the appropriate state of sedation, the extraction proceeds. Depending on the complexity of the tooth (erupted vs. impacted, simple vs. surgical), the process may take anywhere from a few minutes to longer. You won’t feel pain, and most patients have no memory of the procedure at all.

You’ll be monitored through recovery until it’s safe for you to leave with your designated driver.

After the Procedure

Recovery from a sedation-assisted extraction is similar to any extraction, with additional rest recommended due to the sedation itself. Expect:

  • Soreness and mild swelling for several days
  • Soft food diet for the first 24–48 hours
  • Specific aftercare instructions provided by our team
  • A follow-up, if needed, depending on your care plan

Most patients are surprised by how manageable the recovery feels — especially compared to the anxiety they carried beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

With IV sedation or general anesthesia, the goal is complete comfort — no pain, and typically no conscious awareness of what’s happening. Local anesthetic is still used to ensure there’s no pain, even if sedation lightens slightly. You will not be aware of the procedure as you would be at a standard dental visit.

Yes, when administered by trained professionals in a properly equipped clinical environment. At The Dental Anesthesia Center, your sedation is managed by our clinical team throughout the entire procedure. Your vitals are monitored continuously, and we are equipped to handle any changes in your condition.

This is one of the significant advantages of sedation dentistry. Because you’re already under sedation, it’s often possible — and preferable — to complete multiple extractions in a single appointment rather than scheduling several separate visits. This reduces your total number of sedation events and gets your care done with less disruption to your life.
