Is a cleaning every six months really necessary? Learn how often you should get a dental cleaning, who needs them more often, and what to do if it’s been years.
The honest answer is that six months is a useful starting point. Some people do well with less frequent visits, and many people need cleanings more often than they realize. Here is how to think about the right schedule for you, and what to do if it has been a long time since your last visit.
Searching for a new dental clinic is challenging for someone who has
dental anxiety, fear, and traumatic experiences in a dental chair. The staff and doctors at the Dental Anesthesia Center were immediately very welcoming. Dr. Thoms put together a very detailed plan to repair and replace the previous work that I had in the past that was now causing problems. Putting my faith in him was the best thing that I could have done for my situation. I am more than completely satisfied with all of the extensive dental work that I’ve had with Dr.Thoms. I had my fourth sleep dentistry experience yesterday and I’m very happy with my results. I highly recommend this practice and truly want to give them more than five stars! Thank you for giving me back my health and confidence.
I adding to this post because of my visit today with the best dental hygienist Delaina and my exam with Dr. Biehl. I have truly never been to such a caring and supportive dental group. Everyone is always conscientious of my needs and knows that I have issues with anxiety. I am always calm when I am sitting in the chair because of their kindness. I am so pleased with the Dental anesthesia center. There needs to be more than five stars. Thank you, everyone.

I am unusually tense about my appointments. However, from the moment I checked in I relaxed. The staff was welcoming and assuring, and helped me to relax completely. Dr. Hofmann is superb. He is by far the best dentist and dental surgeon I have ever ever experienced.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words! We’re so glad our team helped create a welcoming and comforting experience. We appreciate you sharing your feedback!
I cannot thank this clinic enough for their amazing care. They completely accommodated my individual needs by letting him wait in the hallway where he had more room for his feet and space to pace. Instead of forcing him into a tiny exam room, the dentist came out to the hallway to check his mouth. It made the entire visit so much easier for him. Fantastic service!

Great experience! The staff went above and beyond to make my individual comfortable. They let him wait in the hallway so he could pace instead of staying in the crowded waiting room. The dentist even examined him right there. Highly recommend this accommodating team! Fantastic service!

These guys are fantastic! If you are not going to the dentist because of a bad or painful experience this is the place to go.I was one of those people not going for way too long out of fear and anxiety. One day I had a horrible tooth ache, I put it off too long, the pain was unbearable and I didn`t have a dentist.Thank God I found The Dental Anesthesia Center. Don`t wait for this to happen. I have been a patient now for last fifteen years and I highly recommend you going here. You will be glad you did. The whole staff is the best. .

Today was the second time that I became a registered patient with this office. I had previously had work done in the past with a different clinician, paused treatment for some time, and then returned today and was put with a new physician. I cannot even begin to describe the comfortability that I had with my dental anxiety after leaving the office. The new physician that I met with took over an hour to sit with me and go over my concerns, history, present scans, and any questions about the treatment plan moving forward that I had. She was optimistic, kind, compassionate, and most importantly, there for me in every aspect that a patient requires. She made me hopeful about any future needs I might encounter, and I would truly recommend this office yet again to anyone. They continue to find the kindest staff to support them as well, making it a well-rounded practice from start to finish.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your thoughtful review and kind words. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Our team is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care and helping every patient feel informed and comfortable throughout their visit. I cannot say enough about Dr. Hoffmann and his incredible staff. I never thought for a second that I would not be terrified to go to the dentist for the rest of my life, but Dr. Hoffmann changed that. I have had extensive work done over the last few months, all pain free. I was missing teeth due to a decades old bridge falling out and Dr. Hoffman made sure I had a beautiful smile in time for my daughter’s wedding. I have never experienced a kinder more compassionate team, when you go, you know you are in good hands. There is more work to be done, but I am no longer afraid, at all. Thank you Dr. Hoffmann, and thank you to your team. You’ve changed my life.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful review. Your kind words truly touched all of us. It means so much to know that our focus on compassionate, gentle care and making people feel comfortable is making a difference. Always a welcoming and comfortable experience for my adult son with IDD. He’s been coming to this office for many years now, and he no longer has anxiety with dental work anymore.

Had a really bad experience with my dentist when I was younger. It was about 25 years since I went back to the dentist. My mouth was bad and DR Huffman fixed my teeth and have been going back for 20+ years. The staff are very friendly and my hygienist is very nice and gentle. I don’t even sweat in the chair anymore.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words and 5-star review! We're grateful for your trust and are so glad you've had positive experiences with our team over the years. We truly appreciate your continued confidence in us and look forward to seeing you again!
Excellent experience at the Dental Anesthesia Center. The front office staff was welcoming, caring, and extremely professional. The patient care was outstanding—everyone took the time to explain each step, answer all of my questions, and make sure we were comfortable throughout our visit.
The entire team was professional, compassionate, and highly informative, which gave me great confidence in my care. I truly appreciated the attention to detail and the genuine concern they showed for their patients. I would highly recommend the Dental Anesthesia Center to anyone looking for exceptional care and a positive experience.

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Behl and her entire team during my wisdom tooth extraction. I chose IV sedation, and it made all the difference. I was awake and aware throughout the procedure, but I felt completely relaxed and never experienced the panic or anxiety I usually have at the dentist.
Dr. Behl and her staff were compassionate, professional, and attentive from start to finish, making sure I was comfortable every step of the way. If you have dental anxiety or avoid going to the dentist because of fear, I highly recommend Dr. Behl and her team. They provided exceptional care and made what I expected to be a stressful experience surprisingly calm and comfortable.

Why Cleanings Matter in the First Place
Even with excellent brushing and flossing, a sticky film of bacteria called plaque constantly forms on your teeth. Any plaque you miss hardens into tartar (also called calculus) within days, and once it hardens, no toothbrush can remove it. Only professional instruments can.
Tartar buildup along and below the gumline irritates the gums, and that irritation is the beginning of gum disease. Early gum disease, called gingivitis, is usually reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection damages the bone supporting your teeth. That damage is not reversible, and it is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
A cleaning visit is also an exam visit. Your dentist checks for cavities, cracked teeth, signs of infection, oral cancer, and problems you cannot feel yet. Most dental problems are far easier to treat when they are found early, before they hurt.
Who May Need Cleanings More Often
Your dentist may recommend visits every three to four months if you have:
Gum disease, now or in the past. Once periodontitis has developed, more frequent maintenance cleanings help keep it from progressing.
Diabetes. Gum disease and blood sugar control affect each other in both directions, so gum health matters even more.
Dry mouth, whether from medications, medical conditions, or age. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense, and less of it means faster decay.
Braces, extensive dental work, or physical difficulty brushing, including patients whose disabilities make home care challenging.
Some patients with excellent gum health, low decay risk, and consistent home care may be fine at a comfortable six-month rhythm, and occasionally a dentist may suggest a longer interval. The point is that the schedule should come from your exam, not from a calendar rule.
What If It Has Been Years?
Here is the part that matters most to many of the patients who find their way to our office: what happens if it has been three, five, or fifteen years since your last cleaning?
First, you will get no lecture from us. People stay away from the dentist for real reasons, including fear, past trauma, embarrassment, severe gag reflexes, disabilities that make visits difficult, and busy, complicated lives. Whatever the reason, the answer is the same: the best time to come back is now, and it is nearly always less bad than you fear.
After a long gap, you may need what is called a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), which removes hardened buildup from below the gumline. For patients with significant anxiety, sensitive teeth, strong gag reflexes, or extensive buildup, this can feel like a lot to face while wide awake. That is exactly why our practice exists. At The Dental Anesthesia Center, cleanings, deep cleanings, and any needed treatment can be completed under sedation or general anesthesia, often in a single visit. Years of postponed care do not have to mean years of appointments to catch up.
The Real Rule of Thumb
See your dentist regularly, at whatever interval your dentist recommends based on your gums, your health history, and your risk factors. For many people, that is every six months. For some it is more often. And if it has been years, the schedule that matters is simple: one appointment, booked.
