I want to thank everyone at the Dental Anesthesia Center for taking care of me yesterday—Meaghan helped me get the forms filled out correctly and in on time, Daisy for guiding me in and getting me out safely, Dr. Hoffman for taking care of my teeth and dealing with my really terrible gag reflex, and EVERYONE who helps make this happen. I don't know all of your names, but I do know that it takes all of you working together to make my dental care possible and have good results.

I'm always nervous when I first arrive, even though every procedure has had a good outcome. I've never had any pain or excessive bleeding as a result. The one thing I realized yesterday is that all of you are warm, friendly, positive, you have what is called a good vibe, which helps me a great deal.

Dr Mike Hoffman is the best dentist I’ve ever been to. His whole practice focuses on the patient’s needs. He is the consumate professional with expertise across the dental spectrum and in anesthesia. I highly recommend him and his practice.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your thoughtful review and recommendation! We’re grateful for your kind words and are proud to provide patient-centered care with a focus on comfort and safety.
Yes, my grandson has nonverbal autism and they took very good care of him.. He had to have some extra extractions which I was concerned about, but everything went very well. Very happy and I thank you all for all the work you did.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words. We’re so glad to hear you had a positive experience and that everything went smoothly. We truly appreciate your trust in us.
I took my son to an appointment today with Dr. Hoffman. We had a great experience from the time we arrived until we departed. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful. The dental assistants were very helpful and polite with my son. The doctor is very kind and patient. They explain everything as we went through the process. We were aware of the cost from the beginning to the end and we're allowed to make decisions about how to handle my child's care and not shocked with additional charges after the fact. My child does not resist going to this office. Great experience.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind words! We’re so glad to hear your experience was positive from start to finish. Our team works hard to create a comfortable, transparent, and supportive environment for every patient and family. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback!

How Long Does Dental Anesthesia Last?

The duration of dental anesthesia depends on the type of anesthesia or sedation used. At DAC, every plan is personalized — but here’s a general guide:

🦷 1. Local Anesthesia

This is the most commonly used type for fillings, extractions, and simple dental procedures. It numbs a small area of your mouth so you don’t feel pain.

  • Duration: Usually lasts 1 to 3 hours, depending on the medication type and dose.
  • ❄️ Sensation: You may feel numbness in your lips, tongue, or cheek even after leaving the office.
  • 💡 Tip: Avoid eating or drinking until full sensation returns to prevent accidentally biting your lip or cheek.

😴 2. Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication (such as triazolam or diazepam) before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed. You’ll remain conscious but drowsy.

  • Duration: Effects can last 2 to 8 hours, depending on dosage and individual metabolism.
  • 🚗 Safety: You’ll need a trusted adult to drive you home, as coordination and alertness may take time to return to normal.
  • 💤 Recovery: Most patients describe feeling relaxed and slightly sleepy for the rest of the day.

💧 3. IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation enables the dental team to control the level of relaxation during your procedure carefully. It’s commonly used for longer treatments or patients with significant anxiety.

  • Duration: The sedative effects typically last 4 to 6 hours, but mild drowsiness may continue afterward.
  • 🩺 Monitoring: During IV sedation, your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored for safety.
  • 🛋️ Recovery: Plan to rest at home afterward. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions for 24 hours.

🌙 4. General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is the deepest level of sedation — patients are fully asleep and unaware of the procedure. It’s often used for patients with severe dental anxiety, special needs, or extensive surgical procedures.

  • Duration: The effects can last up to 24 hours, though most patients begin to feel more alert within a few hours after waking.
  • 👩‍⚕️ Supervision: This level of care is provided by an anesthesia-trained dentist or anesthesiologist, such as those at The Dental Anesthesia Center.
  • 🧠 Post-Procedure: Some temporary grogginess, dizziness, or mild nausea can occur, but these effects fade as your body clears the medication.

🌿 How to Prepare for a Sedation Dentistry Appointment

  • A few quick tips to make your visit smooth and stress-free:
    • Follow all pre-sedation instructions from your dental team.
    • 🚗 Arrange transportation home if you’re receiving oral, IV, or general anesthesia.
    • 🥣 Avoid heavy meals before your procedure (specific fasting times will be provided).
    • 👨‍👩‍👧 Bring a friend or family member if you feel anxious — we welcome support companions!

🕊️ The Takeaway: Comfort, Safety, and Trust

Dental anesthesia is designed to make your care comfortable, calm, and safe. While numbness or drowsiness may linger for a few hours, most patients recover quickly and return to normal activities the next day. Whether you need a simple filling or complex restorative treatment, sedation dentistry at The Dental Anesthesia Center in St. Louis may help you receive care confidently — without fear or discomfort.
